Inaugurated in November 2022, the Mondego Footpaths are located at the entry of Guarda, in Beira Interior, right in the centre of mainland Portugal. They run along the Mondego river banks, in the middle of the Serra da Estrela and Estrela Geopark Natural Park.
With 12 km of extension, the trail is characterized for being linear, in a connection between Caldeirão Dam and Videmonte village, being this the recommended direction. It has a medium difficulty, with an accumulated unevenness of 600 m and an average duration between two to five hours, depending on the walkers' capacities. It is necessary to consider that 6,5 Km of the trail are done on wooden structures and the rest on rural, unpaved roads.
For families or people with reduced mobility, alternative routes have been created so that everyone can experience this magnificent contact with nature. The Family Trail is 2 Km long and links Videmonte to the Açude dos Trinta dam. The Path for People with Reduced Mobility is also 2 Km long, but starts in Vila Soeiro Central and ends in Engenho do Pateiro.
It is possible to do the tour all year round, but the timetables vary according to the season. Essentially, you can visit on any day, from 9am to 5pm, with the last recommended entry at 4pm. The Mondego walkways, have a cost of 1€ per person, from 12 years old and up. The tickets can be purchased online at www.passadicosdomondego.pt and in person at the Welcome Center Guarda, located at Praça Luís de Camões.
